I have taken a stab at transcribing this video between Superstar Rajinikanth (SS) and K.Balachander (KB), the guru of Superstar. I hope this will benefit all non-tamil Superstar fans and cine fans.
KB: I transformed the ordinary Sivaji Roa into Rajinikanth. You, by your effort and hardwork have ascended to a great height.
You have evolved to be supported in all parts of the world as renowned actor.
After the release of endhiran you have soared to even greater place. Your image is thrice as tall as the Himalayas. At this instance, What I Intend to ask: "Can this Rajinikanth go back being to Shivaji Rao?
SS: I am able to be Rajinikanth only because I am still the same Shivaji Rao. (Crowd erupts with joy)
The fame has not affected Shivaji Rao and that is the reason I am still the same.
KB: That is correct, the Server sundaram character (1960s - one of KB's Highly acclaimed movies - Where the lead plays a waiter who becomes a film star and feels his life as a waiter was much happier) is a fool but Rajinikanth is very smart.(SS smiles). Server Sundaram should not have thought of going back. He should have stayed the same and must have done good for the people (Making reference to SS here).
KB again: You cannot go to Temples, or for shopping or even walk on the roads, can't have a Tea at a road side stall, you can buy out all the Saravana Bhavans but you cant even have a coffee there. What is the price you paid as SuperStar? You have lost your privacy. Do you feel bad about that?
SS: Yes I do feel bad. I have compromised on my happiness and Joy. (This was a real honest answer
that I appreciate)
KB: True, You feeling bad is justified. I myself ( when not as big a celebrity as SS) feel bad about losing privacy and have regretted for being famous. I can empathise with you on that.
KB: But more than privacy, do you think you have lost something else?
SS: yeah, I kinda feel that I have been imprisoned (by the surroundings and circumstances).
KB: Will you write your auto biography? It will be very helpful for your fans (Crowd cheers ). It will be a big isnpiration.
SS: Auto Biography must contain only factual information(truth). It cannot have false information.
If not written totally truthful it is not worth to be claimed as an auto-biography. After reading Mahatma Gandhi's auto-biography, I feel that if I get the courage like MK then I will write.
KB: You are a big star, all over India and No.1 in India. NDTV has taken a poll and everyone has voted for you. (Crowd Cheers, SS remains as cool as a cucumber and just smiles at the camera). Are you anxious whether you can guard that position or are you taking it easy?
SS: I do not feel that I need to guard that position because I never expected that position. I attained this position in one movie i.e because of Endhiran.
KB: Even if you didn't expect the position, you have got that. Now do you worry about what you are going to do after this?
SS: Yes I have that anxiety. Now it has become more.
KB: Personally without any advertisement, you have helped many people. What are you going to do (as in help/contribution) for Tamil cinema which gave you the God status?
SS: I will do something that Tamil ppl and Tamil cinema Industry would feel proud of.( He was being assertive :))
KB: Very Good.
KB: In these 30 years, have you ever thought that you were not able to do (get a chance/ be able to) any particular movie(in any of the languages)? Did you feel, I should have done this movie or I missed doing this movie?
SS: Yes.
KB: For how many movies have felt like that?
SS: Quite a few. I have pondered about why I didn't do this or am I capable of doing this?
KB: Are there many movies in that list?
SS: Not too many but 1 or 2.
KB: Can you tell which movies?
SS: Nope. I do not want to disclose.
KB: You are like an one man army. Like Sylvester Stallone. None have exploited all your talent.
What do you think about directing your own movie?
SS: Nope. I don't have an idea. It is a very big task.
KB: Not now, but do you think you would take up the directorial venture in the future? In 2-3 years?
SS: I dunno.
KB: If in case you become a director, will you accept me as an assitant.
SS: SS smiles and touches KB's feet and says I'll give you all the due respect (and sure yes).
KB: This is a rapid question. You should not think or take time to think to answer this question.
How many movies have you acted?
SS: 154 (Even the fastest lightning would feel ashamed comparing itself to SS's spontaneity)
KB: Very Good. Very Good. Many actors do not know what they even do. Some ppl do not even watch the movies they themselves have acted. You knowing the number of movie exhibits that you thoroughly read and understand your movies.
KB: This is a serious question. Movies released 50 years ago like " Mughalai Azam", "Veerapandiya kattabomman", "Yenga veetu pillai" are still being watched today by people. 50 years from now, Which movies of yours do you think the people would like to see.
SS: Raghavendra, (KB helps with Batsha), Endhiran.
KB: KB jokes about telling that he SS did not tell any of KB's films.
KB:You are doing movies in one single Genre. Those are based on your Image. I believe that the artist Rajinikanth has 1000 talents within him. You have a bigger image than Amitabh (Crowd cheers - SS stays concentrated). You have a fantastic sense of humour. Will you do a movie like Cheeni Kum which Amitabh did? I really wish you do movies like that.
SS: I don't have a big interest in being satisfied as an artist.I am more commercial and want to entertain the people. I want to do big entertaining movies.
KB: As the director who introduced, I feel bad that you have not received the national award.
Have you felt bad about that?
SS: Yes.
KB: when are you going to get the national award?
SS: It is in the hands of you directors. :) And the trademark Rajinikanth laugh follows.
KB: I can't direct a movie casting you. Because, your image is so big and I am still in the same old thing. I do not know to make a movie with you. (SS says nah.. nothing like that)
But I can make you act in my play (Drama). Will you act as Major Chandrakanth in my play?
SS: Yes sure I will. (Assertive.)
KB: Can we keep the drama on Apr 15th( Making reference about TN elections).
SS: (The naive SS who still thinks that KB is talking about the play says) If you are ready then I am ready. If you tell do, then I will definitely do it.
KB: Kamal has told me that he wants to direct a movie casting KB. Why are you not telling something of that sorts.
SS: If you tell do, then I will definitely do it.
KB: When you direct a movie.. (SS says OK OK)
KB: Do you remember when I named you Rajinikanth
SS: Full moon Day (Pournami). On the day of Holi.
KB: You were in touch either by meeting me or talking over phone(When abroad) on every Holi. You continued that for 7-8 years. After that you forgot.
SS: I am really sorry. I got busy and was not able to do later on. I'll make sure not to make that mistake going forward.
KB: I still think about you on every Holi.
I am telling this whole heartedly: Such big artist(SS) has achieved this level and I have been instrumental in his success. That is what every year Holi reminds me of.
